Administrative/Coaching

  • 17 years athletic administration experience
  • Coached 27 NCAA All-Americans, 10 NCAA Champions, 2 World Champions and 3 Olympic Champions.
  • From 1994 to 2000 Head Wrestling Coach at Brigham Young University. Inheriting a team 2nd to the bottom of the conference, I had no benefits, assistant coaches, or time to recruit for the upcoming year. We improved each year. I was put on as full time faculty in 2 years. I was only allowed to recruit 4 out of the 6 years and 3 of those years recruited top 10 classes. I was the first BYU wrestling coach to recruit three consecutive top 10 recruiting classes. In 2000 we beat all the teams in the Western Athletic Conference by 30 points, the same year they dropped the program. In my final year I was not allowed to recruit and had only one of my top 10 recruiting classes back from their 2 year church missions while my other 2 top 10 classes were still out serving their missions.
  • Produced Aaron Holker, the first All-American in 12 years. BYU dropped the program in 2000 and Aaron transferred to Iowa State and won the NCAA Championships his first year there.
  • Lead BYU into the top 25 rankings for the first time in 13 years.
  • Under my administration BYU Wrestling teams maintained the highest grade point average in the nation four years and second highest three years. Each year Stanford placed 2nd to our 1st and also placed 1st to each of our 2nd place finishes.
  • Administered annual budgets over $360,000.00 for scholarships, staff, travel, equipment, advertising, and promotion.
  • Directed the BYU Summer Wrestling Camp. This included developing the curriculum, hiring staff members, and supervising over 280 High School and Junior High School campers each week.
  • Director of the “BYU Aloha Classic” Wrestling Tournament at BYU-Hawaii. Negotiated a $25,000.00 grant with the Hawaiian government and netted a $11,000.00 profit for BYU. According to the post-tournament evaluations by participating coaches, it immediately became one of the favorite U.S. tournaments.
  • Developed curriculum and taught self-defense at Utah Valley State College for 2 semesters.
  • Elected by the National Wrestling Coaches Association to be the Head Coach for University World Games.
  • 1991-1994 Assistant Coach at Brigham Young University.
